A new monitor almost never arrives running at its full refresh rate. If this reads 60 on a 144 Hz panel, your display settings are the first place to look.

Set the rate in the OS
Windows: Display settings → Advanced display → Choose a refresh rate. macOS: System Settings → Displays. Both will happily leave a 240 Hz monitor at 60 forever.

Why is my 144 Hz monitor running at 60?
Because nobody turned it on. Operating systems pick a conservative default when a display is first connected, driver updates reset it, and a different port can reset it again. Work through this:
- The OS setting. Highest number on the list, then apply.
- The monitor's own menu. Look for "DisplayPort version", "Overclock" or a FreeSync/G-Sync toggle. Some panels need the higher DP mode enabled by hand.
- The cable and port. DisplayPort 1.4 above 144 Hz. On a desktop with a graphics card, plug into the card, not the motherboard.
- Re-run this test. The estimate should land within a frame or two of the rate you picked.
Why does it stutter at a high frame rate?
Because pacing matters more than the average. A monitor fed 165 badly-spaced frames looks worse than one fed 120 evenly — your eye is more sensitive to the change in timing than to the timing itself. Watch the frame time trace: a flat line is good, spikes are not, and the red marks are frames that arrived late enough to be dropped.
Should G-Sync or FreeSync be on?
Leave it however you normally use it. Adaptive sync varies the panel rate to match the GPU, which removes tearing without the latency V-Sync adds. It does make the refresh rate genuinely variable, so the confidence figure reads lower — that is the feature working, not a fault.

What this cannot tell you
Response time and panel input lag need an oscilloscope, not JavaScript. For those, look up a review of your model. But do this first — a large share of "my monitor feels wrong" is just the refresh rate setting.

Where is your ceiling?
Only lanes at or below your refresh rate can look different from each other. If 240 and 165 are indistinguishable, you have just found it.
A display cannot show more frames than it refreshes. On a 60 Hz screen the 120 and 240 lanes look alike, and that is the honest result rather than a bug.

How do I check if my monitor is running at 144 Hz?
Run this and read the estimated refresh rate. Near 144 means you are set. 60 means the rate has not been selected in your display settings.
Why does my 240 Hz monitor show 60 in the browser?
Either the OS is set to 60, the cable or port cannot carry more, or hardware acceleration is off in the browser. Work through those three.
Does the browser limit my frame rate?
It paints in step with the display, so it will not exceed your refresh rate. Within that, modern browsers reach 240 and beyond.
My frame rate is high but it still stutters.
Look at pacing and jitter instead of the average. Frames delivered unevenly look worse than fewer frames delivered evenly.
Is 240 Hz worth it over 144 Hz?
For competitive shooters there is a small real advantage. For everything else, 60 to 144 is the jump you feel; 144 to 240 is a refinement.
