Read from your browser on your own device. Some of it is deliberately vague — browsers round or hide these values to make you harder to track — so "not reported" is a normal answer.
What is a screen FPS test?
It measures how many frames per second actually reach your display. Strictly a screen has no FPS — it has a refresh rate, a fixed number of times per second it replaces the image. What varies is how many new frames arrive in time to be shown, and this page measures both.
What causes screen tearing?
A frame arriving part way through a refresh, so the top of the screen shows one moment and the bottom shows another, split by a horizontal seam. Switch to tear check and watch the vertical edges of the moving bars.
Frames are out of step with the refresh. V-Sync or adaptive sync fixes it.
Frames are in step but unevenly spaced. Look at pacing and jitter, not the average.
Why is my external monitor stuck at 60?
Check the cable before anything else — this catches people out constantly:
- HDMI 1.4 — 1080p at 120, or 4K at 30. Plenty of cables sold today are still this.
- HDMI 2.0 — 4K at 60, 1440p at 144.
- HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 — what you need above 60 at high resolution.
- USB-C hubs — a cheap dock between laptop and monitor is a very common cause of a capped rate.
Can I test a TV?
If it has a browser, yes — but turn game mode on first. The motion processing in a normal picture mode sits between the signal and the panel and makes the result meaningless.

Move the window
The reading describes whichever display the browser window is on. On a multi-monitor setup this is the step everyone forgets.

Go fullscreen and start
Press F. Fullscreen takes the browser chrome out of the picture and, on some systems, unlocks a higher refresh mode.

Switch to tear check
Moving bars make torn frames visible. A clean vertical edge means frames land in step; a horizontal seam means they do not.

Common questions
How do I test my screen refresh rate?
Open this page on the screen you want to test, press start, and read the estimate next to the gauge. Give it ten seconds and check the confidence figure — above 90% is solid.
I have two monitors. Which one is tested?
The one the browser window is on. Drag the window across and run it again for the other.
My screen is 165 Hz but reads 60.
Check your operating system display settings first — the high rate almost always has to be selected by hand. Then the cable, then the laptop power profile.
Does screen resolution affect FPS?
Barely, for this page — it draws a very light scene. For games it matters a lot, because 4K has four times the pixels of 1080p.
What is a good screen frame rate?
One that matches your refresh rate and holds steady. 60 FPS on a 60 Hz panel is a full score.
