What are the common refresh rates?

Where each one turns up, and how long a single frame lasts at it.

How can a web page measure Hz?

The browser gives a page one drawing callback per screen refresh. Time the gaps, take the median, and one divided by that gap is your refresh rate. The median rather than the average, because a single stall would drag a mean out of shape.

How accurate is it?

On a quiet machine it lands within a frame of the true rate and identifies common rates exactly. The estimate is snapped to the nearest real panel rate, because displays do not run at round numbers — 60 Hz is usually 59.94 and plenty of 120 Hz panels run at 119.88.

The confidence figure is the share of frames that landed within 10% of the median. Treat anything under 70% as unreliable and try again with less running.

Why does it disagree with my display settings?

  • Adaptive sync is on. The panel really is varying its rate. Expect lower confidence and a drifting number. Nothing is broken.
  • A power profile is capping it. Laptops and phones routinely halve the panel rate on battery.
  • The setting did not stick. A driver update or a cable change reset it.
  • The window is on another display. The reading follows the browser window, not the machine.

Is refresh rate the same as FPS?

No. Refresh rate belongs to the display and is fixed; frame rate belongs to whatever is drawing and varies constantly. Because the browser paints in step with the display, a browser test can never show a frame rate above your refresh rate — which is why the number you get is the number you can actually see.

Does a higher refresh rate help?

For anything you interact with, yes — each refresh is another chance to show the result of what you just did, so 144 Hz cuts the worst-case wait from 16.7 ms to under 7 ms. For video it is close to irrelevant: film is 24 and television is 25 or 30, and a fast panel just shows each frame several times.

How do I check my refresh rate?

    Quieten the machine

    Close other tabs and anything playing video. The estimate is built from the gaps between frames, so interruptions blur it.

    Run it for ten seconds

    Watch the confidence figure under the number. Above 90% is solid; below 70% means something is interfering.

    Compare with your settings

    Open your display settings and see if they agree. When they disagree, the measurement is usually right and the setting is not being applied.

Common questions

How do I check my monitor refresh rate?

Open this page on the display you want to check and read the gauge. It starts estimating within a couple of seconds; pressing start makes it more accurate.

Why does the number keep changing?

Either adaptive sync is varying the panel rate on purpose, or something else is interrupting the browser. Both show as a lower confidence figure.

Is 60 Hz bad?

Not at all. It is the standard for most work and all video. Higher is a real improvement for games and scrolling, but 60 Hz is fine for most of what people do.

Can I get a higher refresh rate without new hardware?

Sometimes. Check your display setting is on the highest option, the cable can carry it, and any overclock toggle in the monitor menu is on. Past that, the panel is the limit.

Why does my phone show 60 Hz when it says 120?

Battery saving, almost always. Charge it, turn off power saving, and check the display settings for a refresh rate option.
